For community service Glass advisory decorated pumpkins for the Duke Children’s Hospital. We spent a while decorating pumpkins and making sure everybody had their own unique design. It was very fun because it really felt like we were getting into the Halloween spirit. Also, at the same time I was thinking of how happy we were going to make the children who are sick have a fun Halloween too. I didn’t know community service could be this fun! After we decorated them they looked so good because every one of them had their own qualities and looks.
After we finished decorating we got to take them to the hospital and show which ones were whose and why we decorated them like this. A woman who was there talked to us about what she was going to do with the pumpkins and she said that they were going to spread out the pumpkins through the whole hospital so kids could see them wherever they go.
Then she gave us time to ask some questions. I learned many cool facts about the hospital. The thing I thought was the most exciting was that at the hospital they try to make every holiday as fun as possible. On Christmas they have a whole room full of presents and the parents of the child come pick out the ones they think their child will like. Then on Christmas Eve the nurses stay up and deliver them to each room. On Halloween the kids go trick or treating at all the doors in the building that have a ghost on them. In addition to those holidays they do many more and try to celebrate all the holidays the kids would miss at home. It was a blast learning about the holidays and how much fun the kids get to have, but it was also very sad to know that they don’t get to go to school every day and be like all of their other friends.
When I grow up I would love to work there and make kids feel comfortable and happy. This was a great experience and I would like to make something to decorate the hospital for Christmas too!
